Jesus in Scripture 03 • Luke 24:36-47
3:41 Teaching begins
Notes
In all the gospels we see that Jesus rose from the dead but He did not appear directly to His disciples and say, “I’m raised from the dead.” Before they saw Jesus, the disciples heard the scriptures.
Today Jesus again emphasises that He fulfilled the Scriptures. God documented His salvation over hundreds and thousands of years. Through Jesus He fulfilled His salvation. You can believe that the gospel is true, that there is only one true God, and that this is the true salvation, there is no other.
Confirmed Scriptures are as good as touching and handling Jesus Himself.
I’m reading in Luke 24 from verse 36.
1. The Scriptures say who is the Messiah.
A. The son of Abraham.
Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
B. The son of David. 2 Samuel 7:12-17 When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
C. The Son of God.
1. Psalm 2:7-12 “I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron,You shall shatter them like earthenware.’” Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the LORD with reverence and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!
2. Isaiah 43:10-1 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me. I, even I, am the LORD, and there is no saviour besides Me. It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed, and there was no strange god among you; so you are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, and I am God.”
3. Isaiah 45:21-25 “Declare and set forth your case; indeed, let them consult together. Who has announced this from of old? Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, a righteous God and a Saviour; there is none except Me. Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself, the word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness and will not turn back, that to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance. They will say of Me, ‘Only in the LORD are righteousness and strength.’ Men will come to Him, and all who were angry at Him will be put to shame. In the LORD all the offspring of Israel will be justified and will glory.”
4. Isaiah 48:12-17 “Listen to Me, O Jacob, even Israel whom I called; I am He, I am the first, I am also the last. Surely My hand founded the earth, and My right hand spread out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand together. Assemble, all of you, and listen! Who among them has declared these things? The LORD loves him; he will carry out His good pleasure on Babylon, and His arm will be against the Chaldeans. I, even I, have spoken; indeed I have called him, I have brought him, and He will make his ways successful. Come near to Me, listen to this: from the first I have not spoken in secret, from the time it took place, I was there. And now the Lord GOD has sent Me, and His Spirit.” Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.
2. The Messiah is to suffer for our sins.
A. Isaiah 53
Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.
He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the living
For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
But the LORD was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,
He will see His offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out Himself to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.
B. Daniel 9:26 “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined.
3. Rise again from the dead on the third day.
A. Isaiah 55:3-4 “Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, according to the faithful mercies shown to David. Behold, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.
B. Psalm 16:10-11 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.
C. Hosea 6:2 “He will revive us after two days; He will raise us up on the third day, that we may live before Him.
4. Repentance would be proclaimed in His name.
Isaiah 55:1-7 “Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and delight yourself in abundance. Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, according to the faithful mercies shown to David. Behold, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. Behold, you will call a nation you do not know, and a nation which knows you not will run to you, because of the LORD your God, even the Holy One of Israel; for He has glorified you. Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the LORD, and He will have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
5. To all the nations.
A. Genesis 12:3 “And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
B. Isaiah 45:22 “Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.
C. Isaiah 49:5-6 And now says the LORD, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, so that Israel might be gathered to Him (for I am honoured in the sight of the LORD, and My God is My strength), He says, “It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also make You a light of the nations so that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
6. So what?
A. The disciples now know that Jesus is alive from the dead. But He appears to His disciples in verse 36 and still jump scares them. They’re terrified, they think they’re seeing a spirit.
B. He tries to calm them and prove to them that’s it’s really Him, He’s really risen from the dead. He says, “Handle Me.” He even asks for something to eat, and He eats it in front of them. Hallucinations don’t eat food.
C. After all that, Jesus reminds them this is what He told them that all things that are written of Him in the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled. And He opens their minds to understand the Scriptures.
D. That means Jesus counts the Scriptures as better proof of His resurrection than seeing Him, handling Him, or watching Him eat food.
E. The Scriptures point out why all this is happening. Why did God go to such lengths, to choose out a nation for Himself, to designate a king, prophesy that He would die for the sins of the world and rise from the dead? Because there is salvation for you only in Jesus, and there is no other.
F. If you ignore Jesus and don’t turn away from your wickedness, you will die in your sins. There is no forgiveness for ignoring Jesus. Jesus is the only name given to you under heaven by which you must be saved.
G. The Scriptures testify and prove that this is God speaking. So receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.
H. And then keep listening to Him, because He’s still speaking in Scripture. He speaks for your comfort, for strengthening, for your discipline. He’s speaking about His Second Coming, so that you look forward to His appearing. What’s your response to Him? Say like Samuel, “Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.”
Let’s pray
